The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing growing internal dissent ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Tripura, with discontent over candidate selection in Belonia and the resignation of former Kailashahar Municipal Council Vice-Chairperson Nitish Dey triggering fresh political turmoil.

In Belonia, widespread resentment has reportedly erupted among long-time BJP workers over the party's candidate list for the municipal elections. Several disgruntled party activists are reportedly preparing to contest as independent candidates in multiple wards, threatening to undermine the BJP's electoral prospects.

The rebellion reflects growing frustration among sections of the party's grassroots workers, who are reportedly unhappy with the selection of candidates and feel that their contributions have been overlooked. The possibility of rebel candidates entering the electoral fray could complicate the BJP's campaign and potentially split its traditional support base.

Meanwhile, in Kailashahar, former Municipal Council Vice-Chairperson Nitish Dey has announced his complete separation from the BJP, delivering another setback to the ruling party ahead of the civic polls.

At a press conference, Dey declared that he had permanently severed all ties with the BJP. He reportedly broke down in tears while explaining his decision, citing allegations of negotiation-based political dealings, the dominance of outsiders, and being prevented from working effectively.

His departure has triggered fresh speculation about the BJP's organisational stability in Unakoti district and the potential impact on the party's electoral performance in Kailashahar.

The developments in Belonia and Kailashahar point to mounting challenges for the BJP as it prepares for the municipal elections, with dissatisfaction among veteran workers and local leaders emerging as a significant political concern.
