A preliminary police inquiry into an alleged National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) examination fraud in Tripura has indicated the possible involvement of a larger network operating across the state, with several influential individuals suspected to be connected to the racket. Three persons have been arrested so far, and investigators are examining the possible involvement of others in the alleged illegal procurement, storage and circulation of examination-related materials.

The case came to light following a police raid at a residence in Nandannagar's Marak Para area of Agartala on November 3, during which a considerable quantity of written answer books and photocopies of Class X and Class XII answer books allegedly belonging to candidates appearing in the ensuing NIOS examinations were recovered.

According to police records, the case was registered at NCC Police Station as Case No. 2026 NCC 093 under Sections 318(4), 336(3), 340(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint was lodged suo motu by SI Biranlal Jamatia, following the recovery of the suspicious examination materials.

Acting on reliable source information, a police team led by SI Biranlal Jamatia conducted a search at the residence of Ratindra Reang, 50, son of late Ashok Kumar Reang, at Nandannagar Marak Para, under NCC Police Station, at around 8:35 am on November 3.

During the search, police found three persons allegedly in possession of the examination-related materials. They were identified as Ujjal Debbarma, 40, alias Sanjit, a staff nurse originally from Baramaidan under Baijalbari Police Station in Khowai district; Biswajit Debbarma, 30, of Golagathi Dayaram Para under Takharjala Police Station in Sepahijala district; and Prasanjit Debbarma, 37, of Baramaidan under Baijalbari Police Station in Khowai district.

Police said the three persons failed to provide satisfactory explanations during preliminary interrogation regarding the source, ownership and purpose of possessing the answer books and photocopies. The circumstances raised suspicion that the materials might have been procured, stored, exchanged or circulated illegally to facilitate unfair means in the forthcoming NIOS examinations.

Investigators are now probing whether the alleged activities were confined to the three arrested persons or were part of a broader organised operation involving individuals in different parts of Tripura. The possible involvement of influential persons has also emerged as an important line of inquiry, although their identities and alleged roles have not yet been officially disclosed.

The arrested persons, along with the seized materials, were brought to NCC Police Station for necessary legal action. All three FIR-named accused have been arrested, and the investigation is being conducted by W/SI Upashana Debbarma.

The recovery has raised serious questions about the security of the NIOS examination process and the possibility of organised malpractice involving candidates and intermediaries. Police are expected to examine the seized answer books, establish their origin and intended use, and identify any other persons who may have facilitated the alleged racket.
