The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its first list of 45 candidates for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, leaving six seats pending for announcement today. The list, released by Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy, marks a significant reshuffle in the party’s municipal lineup, with six sitting councillors and three members of the current Mayor-in-Council missing from the announced candidates.
The BJP is preparing to contest all 51 wards of the corporation. A comparison of the newly announced list with the existing council reveals that Shilpi Dewan, Subhash Bhowmik, Pintu Ranjan Das, Shilpi Sen, Abhijit Mallik and Jahnabai Das Chowdhury have not been included in the first list.
The 45 candidates announced by the BJP are Prasenjit Sarkar from Ward 1, Sarmista Bardhan from Ward 2, Jagadish Das from Ward 3, Sujata Das from Ward 4, Papia Chowdhury from Ward 5, Mithun Das Baisnab from Ward 6, Jaya Dhanuk from Ward 7, Sampa Sen Sarkar from Ward 8, Pinki Ghosh from Ward 9, Biswajit Roy from Ward 10 and Santi Chowhan from Ward 11.
Pradip Chanda has been nominated from Ward 13, Snigdha Das Deb from Ward 14, Nibash Das from Ward 15, Pinaki Chakraborty from Ward 16, Sikha Banarjee from Ward 17, Narayan Dey from Ward 18, Ratna Datta from Ward 20 and Pemashish Saha from Ward 21.
From Ward 23 onwards, the announced candidates are Mani Mukta Bhattacharjee from Ward 23, Sukhamay Saha from Ward 24, Sima Debnath from Ward 25, Arjun Das from Ward 26, Bidhan Nama from Ward 27, Nandadulal Debnath from Ward 28, Ruma Das from Ward 29, Alpana Das from Ward 30, Anjana Das from Ward 31, Sanjoy Saha from Ward 32, Abhijit Moullik from Ward 33 and Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee from Ward 34.
The remaining announced candidates are Nitu Dey Guha from Ward 36, Bapi Das from Ward 37, Mani Das from Ward 38, Alok Roy from Ward 39, Sampa Sarkar Chowdhury from Ward 40, Shipra Shil from Ward 42, Manika Das Datta from Ward 43, Susmita Saha from Ward 44, Prasenjit Lodh from Ward 46, Prasenjit Sarkar from Ward 47, Sabita Das from Ward 48, Harisadhan Debnath from Ward 49, Rinki Das Bhowmik from Ward 50 and Shuvam Ghosh from Ward 51.
The exclusion of six sitting councillors has drawn particular attention. Shilpi Dewan, the sitting councillor from Ward 26, has not been included, although the BJP has named Arjun Das for the ward. Subhash Bhowmik of Ward 27 has been replaced by Bidhan Nama, while Pintu Ranjan Das of Ward 30 has been replaced by Alpana Das. Shilpi Sen of Ward 32 has been replaced by Sanjoy Saha, Abhijit Mallik of Ward 33 by Abhijit Moullik, and Jahnabai Das Chowdhury of Ward 34 by Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee.
The reshuffle has also affected the current Mayor-in-Council, which comprises ten members, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Three members—Dipak Majumdar, Hiralal Debnath and Uday Bhaskar Chakraborty—are absent from the announced list of 45 candidates.
Dipak Majumdar, the current Mayor, has not been renominated. Hiralal Debnath, who oversees Vehicle and PWD departments, is also missing from the list. Uday Bhaskar Chakraborty, responsible for Electric and Solid Waste Management, has likewise not been included.
Other Mayor-in-Council members have been renominated. Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee, responsible for Public Health and Drinking Water, has been named for Ward 34. Bapi Das, in charge of TUEP and SC Development, has been selected for Ward 37, while Deputy Mayor Manika Das Datta has been nominated from Ward 43. Harisadhan Debnath, who oversees Housing and Sports, has been named for Ward 49, and Jagadish Das, responsible for Municipal Properties and Literacy, has been nominated from Ward 3. Sampa Sarkar Sen, in charge of School Education and NULM, has been selected from Ward 40.
Himani Debbarma, another member of the Mayor-in-Council responsible for ST Development and ICDS, remains in a different category: Ward 22 is among the six wards for which the BJP has yet to announce a candidate. Her electoral status therefore remains unclear pending the final announcement.
The announced list also reflects changes in ward allocation. Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee, currently associated with Ward 35, has been nominated for Ward 34. The BJP has announced candidates for 45 of the corporation’s 51 wards, leaving Wards 12, 19, 22, 35, 41 and 45 pending.
The party is expected to announce the remaining six candidates today, completing its list for all 51 seats. The names will be closely watched to determine whether any of the excluded sitting councillors or Mayor-in-Council members will return to the electoral contest.
The reshuffle suggests that the BJP is seeking to balance continuity with organisational renewal ahead of the civic elections. The final list will provide a clearer picture of the party’s strategy for retaining control of the Agartala Municipal Corporation while introducing new faces into its municipal leadership.
