Ranjit Debbarma’s Security Withdrawn, Pradyot Kishore and Tipra Motha Silent: MLA writes to President Droupadi Murmu alleging partisan treatment by Tripura Police

The withdrawal of personal security personnel from Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has triggered a political controversy, with questions being raised over the silence of party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and the party leadership despite the MLA’s serious allegations against the Tripura Police Security Wing.

Debbarma has now approached President Droupadi Murmu, alleging that his security personnel were withdrawn without prior information or consultation and that repeated representations to the authorities failed to produce any response. However, even after the matter reached the President, neither Pradyot Kishore Debbarma nor the Tipra Motha leadership has publicly mounted a forceful protest against the BJP-led Tripura Government.

The controversy has raised a larger political question: Why is Tipra Motha unable to break its electoral alliance with the BJP despite repeated grievances and unfulfilled commitments under the tripartite agreement?

In a representation dated November 3, Debbarma accused SP Security Amitabha Paul of alleged partiality, bias and corruption in the deployment of personal security officers. He claimed that security personnel assigned to him had been transferred repeatedly without consultation and that his security cover had been progressively reduced.

According to the MLA, one of his personal security officers was withdrawn on October 10 without prior information. He subsequently submitted a complaint to the SP Security on October 13, seeking impartial action. On October 23, he surrendered two personal security officers in protest against what he described as undesirable activities within the Security Wing.

Debbarma alleged that he had been left without any personal security officer since October 23, despite representing a constituency that includes remote and sensitive areas. Citing incidents of violence in Tripura, he expressed concern over the risks of moving without security during the ongoing municipal election process.

In his letter to the President, the MLA also referred to alleged past attacks on elected representatives and ministers, claiming that police negligence and partiality had contributed to serious security concerns.

The political significance of the controversy lies in the apparent disconnect between Debbarma’s grievances and his party’s current political position. Although he has repeatedly warned that Tipra Motha would reconsider its electoral alliance with the BJP unless the commitments made under the March 2024 tripartite agreement were fulfilled, the party has continued its cooperation with the BJP.

Debbarma has reportedly issued such warnings on numerous occasions, insisting that the party would not enter into an electoral alliance if the BJP’s central leadership failed to honour the agreement. Yet, with the civic elections approaching, Tipra Motha has entered into a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP.

Critics allege that whenever elections approach, the party’s warnings are followed by renewed negotiations with the BJP’s central leadership, including meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, eventually paving the way for electoral cooperation. The latest developments have intensified scrutiny of whether Tipra Motha’s repeated threats to leave the alliance are politically meaningful or merely a bargaining strategy.

The silence of Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and the party leadership over Ranjit Debbarma’s security withdrawal has further fuelled questions about the party’s willingness to confront the BJP-led government on issues affecting its own elected representatives.

While Ranjit Debbarma has now sought the President’s intervention, the broader question remains unanswered, If Tipra Motha believes that the BJP-led government is failing to honour its commitments and is treating its MLA unfairly, why does the party continue to remain in an electoral alliance with the BJP?

The controversy has once again brought the implementation of the tripartite agreement, Tipra Motha’s political independence and its alliance strategy under public scrutiny.
