A local court on Monday remanded seven male accused to four days of police custody and sent three female accused to judicial custody in connection with the attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari in Boxanagar, Sepahijala district, during an alleged drug-smuggling incident.
Police have so far arrested ten accused in connection with the attack and the alleged attempt to snatch weapons from BSF personnel. The accused were produced before the court on Monday, where Judicial Magistrate First Class Sayantan Roy passed the orders.
The prosecution was represented by Public Prosecutor Gautam Giri and Assistant Public Prosecutor Chanchal Roy Chowdhury. Investigators are expected to question the seven men in police custody to establish the sequence of events, identify other individuals allegedly involved and uncover further details about the incident.
Police believe that the interrogation could yield significant information about the attack and the suspected smuggling network operating in the area.
According to preliminary accounts, the incident began when BSF personnel intervened in an alleged drug-smuggling operation at Ashabari. The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation in which BSF personnel were attacked and an attempt was allegedly made to snatch their weapons.
In a significant development, police arrested a key accused from a hospital, where he had reportedly been admitted after claiming to have sustained a leg injury. The accused is alleged to have pretended that his leg was broken, and investigators suspect that his role was central to the chain of events that led to the confrontation.
Meanwhile, security has been strengthened across the area following the attack. BSF personnel and police conducted a joint road march from Rahimpur to Boxanagar as part of efforts to restore public confidence and reinforce security.
The joint march involved personnel from four security forces, highlighting the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the incident. The exercise was aimed at maintaining law and order, deterring further violence and reassuring residents.
The incident has also triggered political questions. Asked by journalists whether a local BJP MLA had instigated the attack on BSF personnel, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharya said that if such involvement existed, the law enforcement authorities would look into the matter.
The investigation remains underway, and police are expected to pursue further leads as the accused undergo interrogation and judicial proceedings.
