Three Border Security Force (BSF) jawans were brutally assaulted by a group of alleged smugglers in the Ashabari area of Boxanagar on Monday morning, triggering widespread tension along the India-Bangladesh border. Several journalists covering the incident were also injured while attempting to rescue the assaulted personnel.
The shocking incident has once again brought the spotlight on alleged smuggling networks, security vulnerabilities along the border and the failure of local political representatives to take a firm stand against criminal activities in the region.
According to information available, the incident began around 9 AM near Gate Nos. 174 and 175 in the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP) area, where alleged smugglers were attempting to transport illegal goods through a section of the border. BSF personnel of the 49th Battalion, deployed in the area, reportedly chased the suspected smugglers, who scattered in different directions.
During the operation, BSF personnel detained a man identified as Hefzur Rahman approximately 400 metres from the initial location. The jawans reportedly questioned him regarding his alleged involvement in smuggling. Rahman maintained that he was not involved in the illegal activity. During the confrontation, he sustained a leg injury and began bleeding. He was subsequently taken to Boxanagar Hospital for preliminary treatment and later brought to Ashabari New Market.
The incident soon escalated when a group of alleged smugglers gathered in the area. According to local accounts, a person identified as Babu allegedly mobilised supporters through mobile messages, leading to a road blockade on the Boxanagar-Rahimpur road.
Journalists from the Boxanagar Press Club arrived at the scene around 10 AM to cover the protest. While they were speaking with the demonstrators, three BSF personnel from Rahimpur-Kantamura BOP approached the blockade in an official vehicle.
As soon as the vehicle reached the spot, the jawans were allegedly surrounded and brutally attacked by the assembled crowd. Video footage of the incident reportedly shows the attackers assaulting the personnel, striking their heads, throwing them to the ground and attempting to snatch their firearms. Several women were also reportedly seen among the attackers.
Journalists present at the scene intervened to protect the injured jawans. They reportedly recovered the firearms from the attackers and helped ensure that the weapons were returned to the BSF personnel. The government vehicle carrying the jawans was also vandalised during the attack. Some journalists sustained injuries while attempting to rescue the personnel.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of security forces operating in the border region. BSF sources reportedly claimed that some of the attackers were Bangladeshi nationals who had allegedly been involved in smuggling activities while staying in the Ashabari area. These claims have yet to be independently verified.
Following the attack, additional BSF personnel arrived from Ashabari BOP, prompting the attackers to flee. Senior police and BSF officials subsequently reached Boxanagar to assess the situation and initiate further action.
A CCTV camera installed at a house opposite the location of the attack is believed to have captured the incident. Police and BSF personnel have reportedly collected the footage, which could prove crucial in identifying those involved and establishing the sequence of events.
The assault has revived longstanding concerns about alleged smuggling networks operating in Boxanagar, particularly in areas where stretches of the international border remain without barbed-wire fencing.
Local allegations suggest that political patronage has emboldened certain smuggling groups and that some influential ruling-party supporters have allegedly encouraged such activities. Critics have also questioned the silence of local BJP legislators and leaders over repeated incidents involving alleged smugglers and attacks on security personnel.
There have further been allegations that certain BSF personnel maintain links with smuggling networks and facilitate illegal activities in exchange for money. These serious allegations remain unverified and warrant an impartial investigation.
The absence of fencing along several border stretches has also raised questions about the effectiveness of border management. Residents and observers have expressed concern over whether sufficient efforts are being made to secure vulnerable sections of the border and prevent illegal cross-border movement.
The attack on Monday has intensified demands for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged smuggling networks, possible political protection, suspected collusion and security gaps along the border.
As of the filing of this report, no formal complaint had reportedly been lodged by either side at Kalamchowra police station. However, the BSF was expected to file a complaint later in the day. The situation in Ashabari remained tense, with security forces maintaining vigilance.
The brutal assault on personnel tasked with protecting the country's borders has drawn widespread condemnation. The incident also underscores the urgent need for accountability, effective border security and decisive action against those involved in smuggling and violence, regardless of their political connections or influence.
You can add the following paragraph to the news report, highlighting the allegations while distinguishing them from established facts:
Local journalists and residents have also raised serious allegations against sections of the local police, political leadership and other influential individuals, claiming that they are involved in or provide protection to networks engaged in smuggling illegal goods across the border into Bangladesh. These allegations have intensified public concern over the alleged nexus between smugglers and those entrusted with maintaining law and order and border security. The alleged involvement of law enforcement personnel and political figures, if established, would represent a grave breach of public trust and raise serious questions about the effectiveness of anti-smuggling operations in Boxanagar. The allegations call for an independent and impartial investigation to identify those responsible and ensure accountability, irrespective of their positions or political affiliations.
