An official inquiry into the accumulation of sand and mud on National Highway-08 at Shanichharra in Dharmanagar has confirmed that unauthorised approach roads constructed by local stone-crushing units were responsible for soil runoff onto the highway during rainfall. However, despite establishing the cause of the road damage and traffic disruption, the District Administration has not announced any action against those responsible for the irregular construction.
According to a clarification issued by the District Administration, North Tripura, a joint field inspection was conducted on November 2, 2026, by revenue authorities and officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), following reports of mud accumulation and a highway blockade at Shanichharra.
The inspection reportedly found that unauthorised earthen approach roads constructed by local stone-crushing units had allowed soil to wash onto the highway during rains, affecting the smooth movement of traffic. The findings point to irregular construction practices and inadequate control over access roads connected to the national highway as the underlying causes of the disruption.
In response to the findings, NHIDCL has reportedly decided to immediately undertake construction of a permanent concrete wall along the affected highway stretch to prevent further soil runoff. The District Administration has also stated that strict instructions have been issued prohibiting unauthorised approach roads.
While these measures may help prevent a recurrence of the problem, the clarification does not specify whether the stone-crushing units responsible for constructing the unauthorised roads will face penalties, whether the illegal structures will be removed, or whether any enforcement proceedings have been initiated.
The absence of announced accountability measures raises questions about how violations of highway regulations will be addressed and whether those responsible for the disruption will be held liable for the damage and inconvenience caused to commuters.
The accumulation of sand and mud on NH-08 and the subsequent blockade disrupted traffic on a key highway corridor in North Tripura. The incident highlights broader concerns surrounding unauthorised access roads, drainage management and enforcement of highway safety regulations in areas where industrial activities operate close to major roads.
The District Administration has reiterated its commitment to public safety, proper road infrastructure and preventing similar incidents.
