Left Front candidates contesting the upcoming municipal and urban local body elections in Mohanpur, Jirania and Ranirbazar have approached the West Tripura District Magistrate after allegedly facing obstruction while attempting to file their nomination papers.
The candidates reportedly failed to submit their nominations amid allegations of intimidation and interference by BJP-backed miscreants, raising concerns over the freedom of opposition candidates to participate in the electoral process.
The issue has also intensified political tensions in Khowai, where CPI(M) MLA Nirmal Biswas alleged that BJP-backed miscreants had been obstructing Left Front candidates from filing their nomination papers for the past two days.
Following a protest rally in Khowai town, Biswas claimed that similar incidents had already occurred in Jirania, Ranirbaza, Mohanpur and Kamalpur before reaching Khowai. He alleged that despite repeated attempts, the candidates had been unable to submit their nomination papers because the police had failed to provide adequate security.
According to the MLA, Left Front candidates in Khowai were unable to file their nominations even on Monday due to the alleged obstruction. He accused the ruling party's supporters of using intimidation to prevent opposition candidates from entering the electoral contest.
Biswas, however, asserted that the CPI(M) candidates would continue their efforts to submit their nomination papers and participate in the elections.
The Left Front's allegations have brought the issue of candidate safety and the impartiality of election-related security arrangements into focus ahead of the civic polls. The opposition has called for effective police protection and an environment in which all candidates can exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.
