A dispute over the recruitment of an Anganwadi helper in the Dhanpur area of Tripura's Sepahijala district escalated into a road blockade on Monday, with angry villagers protesting alleged political favouritism in the appointment process.

The blockade was staged on the Sonamura–Kathalia road after allegations surfaced that the Anganwadi helper's job at a centre in Taziamura had been awarded to a candidate connected to the district BJP leadership. The protesters expressed resentment over what they described as the appointment of a politically influential person's family member at the expense of deserving local candidates.

The agitating residents questioned the fairness and transparency of the recruitment process, arguing that ordinary people are expected to vote during elections while political leaders allegedly secure government-linked jobs for their own families. The protest highlighted growing frustration among villagers over perceived political interference in local employment opportunities.

The controversy comes at a politically sensitive time, with municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections approaching in Tripura. The Anganwadi recruitment dispute is increasingly being viewed as a potential electoral issue, particularly in rural areas where access to government jobs and the fairness of recruitment procedures remain major public concerns.

The road blockade also disrupted the movement of vehicles and created difficulties for commuters and people travelling between Sonamura and Kathalia.

The disruption had an additional impact on the education sector. Half-yearly examinations for Classes IX, X, XI and XII were scheduled to be held on Monday in schools under the Kathalia Inspector of Schools. Several teachers reportedly faced difficulties reaching Kathalia to collect examination question papers because of the road blockade.

The situation raised concerns about the possible disruption of examinations and inconvenience to students, teachers and school authorities. The protesters' demand for accountability in the Anganwadi recruitment process thus extended beyond the immediate dispute, affecting essential public services and educational activities.

The incident has renewed calls for transparent and merit-based recruitment in Anganwadi centres, with residents demanding that appointments be made fairly and without political influence. The administration's response to the allegations and the protesters' demands is expected to be closely watched as the civic election campaign gathers momentum.
