The organisation of a religious satsang dedicated to Shri Shri Thakur Anukulchandra inside Bishalgarh Central Correctional Home has raised questions about religious activities within government-run correctional institutions and the need to ensure religious neutrality and equal treatment of inmates belonging to different faiths.

The issue came into focus after Minister Santana Chakma shared a Facebook post on November 1, stating that she had attended a satsang at the Bishalgarh-based correctional facility. In her post, she described the gathering as an opportunity to inspire inmates towards self-reformation, humanity and a renewed commitment to leading an honest life.

Chakma expressed hope that the spiritual teachings of Thakur Anukulchandra would encourage inmates to overcome past mistakes, regain self-confidence and work towards a better future.

However, the event has prompted questions about the guidelines governing religious programmes inside government correctional facilities. While spiritual and moral guidance can play a constructive role in rehabilitation, concerns arise over whether such programmes are organised in an inclusive and non-discriminatory manner.

Correctional institutions accommodate inmates from diverse religious backgrounds, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians and followers of other faiths. This raises questions about whether comparable opportunities are available to all religious communities and whether participation in such programmes is entirely voluntary.

The central issue is not the value of spiritual guidance itself, but whether government institutions maintain religious neutrality while ensuring equal respect for the beliefs and rights of every inmate.

There is also a broader question about the framework under which religious organisations are permitted to conduct programmes inside correctional facilities. Transparency, administrative oversight and equal access for different faiths are essential to ensure that rehabilitation initiatives do not create perceptions of religious preference.
