Police have confirmed that the pistol recovered from the residence of Congress leader Bapta Chakraborty in Khayerpur was not a genuine firearm but a toy pistol. Chakraborty has been detained by investigators in connection with the alleged firing incident, while the recovered toy pistol is being sent for examination.
The incident followed allegations of firing at BJP workers returning from a political rally near the Chaturdash Devata temple in Khayerpur earlier on Saturday. The incident triggered tension in the area, with allegations of political violence and an attack on Chakraborty’s residence.
Police said they were investigating the incident and examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing and the recovery of the pistol.
Chakraborty maintained that the recovered pistol was a toy and claimed that he had used it to create a blank firing sound in self-defence when a group of BJP supporters allegedly attempted to break into his residence.
According to the Congress leader Baptu Chakraborty, the alleged attackers were armed with machetes and iron rods and tried to force their way through the door of his house. He claimed that the sound from the toy pistol frightened them and forced them to retreat. He further alleged that the group later returned with additional people and entered his house in the presence of police personnel.
Chakraborty also alleged that the attack was intended to disrupt a Daridra Narayan Seva programme organised in his locality to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The programme involved distributing khichuri to underprivileged people and was reportedly nearing completion around 5 pm in the presence of Gopal Roy when the incident occurred.
The Congress leader claimed that he knew the BJP workers allegedly responsible for the attack and accused them of deliberately targeting the charitable programme.
Police have not publicly confirmed these allegations. The investigation is continuing.
