Tension gripped Kamalpur during a rally organised by CPI(M) candidates and supporters to submit nomination papers for the upcoming Urban Local Body elections after alleged BJP workers attacked the procession, leaving five CPI(M) leaders and workers injured, including two seriously, according to the opposition party.
The alleged attack prevented the CPI(M) candidates from submitting their nomination papers, raising fresh concerns over the political atmosphere surrounding the November 27 municipal elections in Tripura.
CPI(M) leaders accused BJP workers of launching the assault while the party's candidates and supporters were marching towards the nomination filing venue. The opposition alleged that the incident exposed the contradiction between the BJP's public claims of defending democracy and its alleged actions on the ground.
Questioning the BJP's democratic credentials, CPI(M) leaders pointed to a rally held at Astabal Maidan in Agartala, where BJP leaders and ministers reportedly called for the protection of democracy, while their party workers were allegedly attacking opposition candidates in Kamalpur.
The CPI(M) also alleged that the presence of police personnel emboldened the attackers, while the violence subsided after the police left the area. The party questioned the role of law enforcement and demanded accountability for the alleged assault.
The incident has intensified political tensions ahead of the Urban Local Body elections, scheduled for November 27, with counting of votes slated for December 2.
The alleged attack in Kamalpur has once again brought the issue of opposition candidates' freedom to campaign and file nominations into focus, as political parties prepare for the upcoming civic polls.
