The Election Commission of India (ECI) has approved a revised schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura, postponing the exercise in view of the General Elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state. According to an official communication dated October 29, the final electoral roll under the revised programme will be published on April 7, 2027, with January 1, 2027, retained as the qualifying date.
The decision follows a request from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Tripura, seeking deferment of the SIR schedule because of the forthcoming urban local body elections. In its letter bearing reference number 23/SIR/2026-ERS, the Commission informed the CEO that the proposal had been approved and issued a revised timetable for the exercise.
The revised programme will begin with the preparation, training and printing of materials from December 15 to December 24, 2026. The next stage, involving house-to-house visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), will take place from December 26, 2026, to January 25, 2027. During this period, BLOs will undertake field-level verification as part of the electoral roll revision process.
The Commission has directed that the rationalisation and rearrangement of polling stations be completed by January 27, 2027. The draft electoral roll is scheduled for publication on February 1, 2027, marking the beginning of the formal stage in which electors and other stakeholders can examine the draft list and identify discrepancies.
The period for filing claims and objections will run from February 1 to March 2, 2027. The notice phase and disposal of claims and objections will continue from February 1 to April 1, 2027. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on April 7, 2027.
The revised schedule is expected to provide the state election machinery with additional time to manage the electoral preparations associated with the urban local body polls while carrying out the nationwide electoral roll revision exercise in Tripura. The deferment also changes the timeline for voters, political parties and election officials to participate in the verification and correction process.
The Commission has clarified that all other guidelines issued under its SIR order dated May 14, 2026, will remain unchanged and continue to apply in Tripura.
