The Tripura BJP has finalised its candidate list and completed preparations for the forthcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in Tripura, state party president Abhishek Debroy said on Tuesday.

Speaking after a meeting of the party’s core committee in Agartala, Debroy said the BJP would announce its nominees once the election schedule was declared. The party is preparing to contest elections to 21 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

“The candidate list is ready. We will announce the names after the elections are declared,” he said, expressing confidence that the party would win all the bodies.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, BJP national general secretary and former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the party’s North-East coordinator Sambit Patra, Tripura in-charge Mriganka Debbarma and other core committee members attended the meeting.

Debroy said the meeting reviewed the party’s organisational activities, election preparations and campaign strategy.

He also criticised opposition parties over their objections to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging they were misleading people about the exercise. He maintained that electoral roll revisions had been conducted in the past, including during the tenures of the CPI(M) and Congress governments, citing 1995 and 2004 as examples.

The BJP leader accused opposition parties of attempting to create unrest for political gains and alleged they lacked the ability to return to power through elections. No response from the opposition was available to the allegations.

Debroy said the BJP would participate in a protest scheduled for October 31 over the controversy surrounding electoral roll revision.

The party has also begun preparations for the forthcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections, he said, adding that discussions had covered the party’s strategy and approach.
