The latest organisational appointments announced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura have raised questions over the allocation of responsibilities among its frontal organisations, particularly the decision to appoint a male leader as the State Morcha Prabhari of the Mahila Morcha and an OBC leader to oversee the Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha.
According to an organisational appointment letter issued by BJP Tripura State President Abhishek Debroy on October 27, seven senior party workers have been assigned responsibilities as State Morcha Prabharis. The appointments cover the Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Mahila, Yuva, Kisan and Minority Morchas.
The order names State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma as the Prabhari of the ST Morcha, State General Secretary Chandan Debnath as the Prabhari of the SC Morcha, and State Vice-President Tapas Majumder as the Prabhari of the OBC Morcha.
The appointment of Bhagaban Chandra Das, a male leader and State General Secretary, as the Prabhari of the Mahila Morcha has drawn particular attention. Similarly, the assignment of Chandan Debnath, who has been identified in the appointment order as a State General Secretary, to oversee the SC Morcha has prompted questions about the criteria used in distributing responsibilities among the party's social and community-based wings.
Under the same order, Smt. Mimi Majumder, a State Secretary, has been appointed Prabhari of the Yuva Morcha; State Secretary Kamal Dey has been entrusted with the Kisan Morcha; and Md. Jashim Uddin, former State President of the Minority Morcha, has been assigned responsibility for the Minority Morcha.
The appointments have brought the party's internal organisational arrangements into focus at a time when political parties are seeking to consolidate their support among different social groups ahead of upcoming urban local body elections.
The Mahila Morcha is the BJP's women's wing and is expected to represent women's concerns, strengthen women's participation in party activities and coordinate its organisational programmes. The appointment of a male leader as its Prabhari therefore raises questions about how the party intends to coordinate the wing's activities and ensure meaningful participation by women in organisational decision-making.
