Traffic fines have emerged as a source of government revenue in Tripura, with the state collecting Rs 30,75,500 in penalties for illegal parking between January and September 2026, according to a clarification issued by the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department, Government of Tripura.
The official clarification, issued on October 27, provides figures on traffic enforcement in connection with a report published by the Bengali daily on October 4 concerning alleged traffic congestion and parking irregularities around the GB Pant Hospital complex in Agartala.
According to the ICA statement, traffic authorities issued 5,449 challans for illegal parking during the first nine months of 2026. In addition, 4,656 prosecution reports were submitted, 315 vehicles were towed away and 7,889 notices were issued.
The collection of more than Rs 30.75 lakh in fines over nine months highlights the financial contribution of traffic enforcement to the government. However, the figures also raise an important public-interest question: whether the primary objective of traffic policing is being achieved through improved road discipline, or whether the continuing volume of violations reflects persistent problems with parking management and traffic regulation.
The ICA clarification stated that the investigation into the GB Pant Hospital-related report found auto-rickshaws and privately owned vehicles parked beside roads around the hospital complex. However, the authorities reportedly did not find any major obstruction to ambulance movement during the investigation.
The department further stated that 10 private security personnel had been deployed at the AGMC and GB Pant Hospital complex to regulate parking and monitor vehicular movement. In the GB Bazaar area, traffic personnel were reportedly deployed in two shifts under the supervision of a sector officer of Deputy Superintendent of Police rank to maintain normal traffic movement and prevent illegal parking.
The figures published in the clarification provide a snapshot of the enforcement measures taken by the traffic authorities.
The official statement does not establish that revenue generation is the objective of traffic policing.
For residents and commuters, the central issue remains whether these enforcement measures will produce lasting improvements in parking discipline, reduce congestion in busy commercial areas and ensure unobstructed access to hospitals for emergency vehicles.
