What was all along waiting to happen has finally happened with ‘Tipra Motha’ chief Pradyot Kishore surfacing from his self-declare retirement from active politics to proclaim afresh his continued commitment to the cause of indigenous people-that is, tribals of the state. Appearing live on social media Pradyot said that though his innings in active politics has ended he remains committed to the cause of common people of the state . There will be no compromise on the vital interests of the ‘Tiprasa’ people, he asserted.
“ I appeal to the common people and political authority in the state to strengthen the bond of love and amity between the indigenous people and the Bengalis; their unity will be the bedrock of the development of the state” said Pradyot in his social media message to the people. Significantly , he stressed the importance of preserving and protecting the socio-economic and political interests of the Bengalis alongside the protection of rights of the indigenous tribal people. “It is not desirable that protection and promotion of rights of one community should harm the vital interests of the other community living side by side” said Pradyot in a positive political signaling, rising above the politics of sectarian exclusivism he had indulged in earlier in electoral interest.
“Tripura can emerge as a developed state with joint and equal development of both the communities and this will make the state stronger in all respects ; the ‘Tiprasa Accord’ signed by union home ministry , state government and the stake holders will also be implemented and an important meeting in this regard is scheduled to come off soon” said Pradyot. He however did not make it clear when the meeting will be held and where though it is expected to be held early.
Nortably, the ‘Tiprasa Accord’ was first signed in March 2024 by the union home ministry, Tripura government and the ‘Tipra Motha’ but its implementation still raises questions. It had been signed for the overall socio-economic, cultural rights of the indigenous people of the state and it is all set to be implemented soon . The indication given by Pradyot Kishore of an impending meeting on this has given a new dimension to the the entire matter, specially in the context of the upcoming statewide elections to the 21 civic bodies including the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
