Preparations for the upcoming urban local body elections in Tripura have reportedly gathered momentum, with polling potentially scheduled for November 30 and the election notification likely to be announced by October 28. The elections are expected to cover 21 urban local bodies across the state, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
According to preliminary indications, counting of votes may take place four to five days after polling. However, the proposed dates are yet to be officially confirmed by the Tripura State Election Commission.
The State Election Commission has reportedly intensified preparations for conducting the elections in a peaceful, fair and orderly manner. The necessary technical preparations, including first-level checking of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), have reportedly been completed. The machines are being kept in secure locations under the supervision of the district election authorities.
The Commission has also reportedly held meetings with representatives of political parties and consulted district election officials and senior police officers to assess the preparedness for the polls. Security arrangements, election management and other logistical requirements are understood to be among the key areas under review.
The deployment of central security forces is expected to be a significant issue in the run-up to the elections. Opposition parties have reportedly stressed the need for adequate central forces to ensure that voters can exercise their democratic rights without fear, intimidation or undue influence.
Opposition leaders have expressed concerns over alleged irregularities, violence and intimidation during previous elections, particularly the 2021 urban local body polls. They have demanded effective measures to prevent booth capturing, voter intimidation and other electoral malpractices.
The role of the administration and police will therefore remain under close scrutiny as the election process advances. Ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process are expected to be among the principal challenges facing the authorities.
