Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, Accused in Usha Bazar Murder Case, Dies at GBP Hospital; Family Alleges Negligence in Emergency Treatment

Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, an accused in the murder case of former Bharat Ratna Sangha secretary Durga Prasanna of Usha Bazar, died on Friday while undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala, following an alleged medical emergency at Bishalgarh Central Jail. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised questions, with his family alleging that he did not receive timely medical treatment.

According to statements attributed to family members, Pradyut suddenly fell seriously ill at Bishalgarh Central Jail on Friday morning. The jail authorities subsequently shifted him to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala for medical treatment.

The family has alleged that doctors at the hospital sought written authorisation from either the jail authorities or a family member before administering an expensive injection considered necessary for his treatment.

However, according to the family's account, no jail official was willing to sign the required consent form, while none of his family members was present at the hospital at that time. The family claims that the resulting situation prevented the doctors from administering the injection and that Pradyut subsequently died at the hospital.

The allegations have raised concerns about the handling of medical emergencies involving prisoners and the procedures followed when urgent treatment requires consent or financial authorisation.

However, the family's allegations have not been independently verified. The precise nature of Pradyut's medical emergency, the identity and purpose of the injection, the medical team's assessment, and the reasons for the reported delay remain unclear.

Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury had been arrested by police in connection with the murder of Durga Prasanna, the former secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha in the Usha Bazar area. He had remained lodged at Bishalgarh Central Jail following his arrest.

The murder case had drawn attention because of the circumstances surrounding the killing and the subsequent police investigation. Pradyut was an accused in the case, and his death in custody has now added a new dimension to the matter.
