A rubber farmer in Tripura’s Kumarghat subdivision has been left devastated after miscreants allegedly cut down and destroyed rubber trees on his plantation during the festive season. The incident has caused considerable distress to farmer Bibhishan Debnath and his family, who fear the loss of their hard-earned investment and agricultural livelihood.
Bibhishan Debnath, a resident of Ward No. 6 under Ratia Bari Gram Panchayat in Kumarghat police station limits, had developed a rubber plantation on approximately two and a half kani of land near the banks of the Manu River and the adjoining Shibchhara River. The plantation, located around half a kilometre from his residence, reportedly contained approximately 180 rubber trees.
However, the farmer’s efforts to build a source of income through rubber cultivation suffered a serious setback when unidentified miscreants allegedly entered the plantation and cut down nine trees, leaving them completely destroyed.
The incident has left Debnath and his family in deep distress. Speaking to the media, the landowner and his wife reportedly broke down while describing their suffering and the damage caused to the plantation. For a family that had invested time, labour and resources in cultivating rubber trees, the alleged act of vandalism has raised serious concerns about the security of their agricultural property.
Written Complaint Lodged with Police
Following the incident, a written complaint has reportedly been lodged at Kumarghat Police Station. The family is now awaiting appropriate action from the police and hopes that an investigation will identify those responsible and establish the motive behind the alleged destruction.
The identity of the persons involved and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been established. A thorough investigation is necessary before responsibility can be attributed to any individual or group.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to allegations of deliberate damage to agricultural property in different parts of Tripura. There have been allegations in various localities of fish being killed through the poisoning of ponds and fruit, vegetable and rubber plants being damaged or destroyed, allegedly to settle personal or political scores.
The supplied account alleges that such incidents have become more frequent since 2018, when the BJP-led government came to power in the state.
