In a significant development in the controversy over the alleged racial harassment of a tribal youth from Tripura by Delhi-based content creator Amir Sokin, the accused has reportedly been detained by police in Delhi following intervention by Tripura Police, amid mounting public outrage across the state.

According to information received on Thursday, a team of Tripura Police, comprising DSP Sumitra Debbarma, two police constables and a police sub inspector, reached Delhi to coordinate with the Delhi Police and take action in connection with the case. The team is expected to bring the detained content creator to Agartala on Friday, October 23, subject to the completion of the necessary legal formalities.

The development comes after widespread protests and demands for immediate action from political parties, indigenous organisations, student bodies and civil society groups across Tripura. The alleged incident has generated strong reactions among people who view the controversy as an issue involving the dignity, identity and equal treatment of the people of Tripura and the wider Northeast.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha had reportedly directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to coordinate with the Delhi Police and take appropriate steps in connection with the matter. The deployment of the Tripura Police team to Delhi followed the growing public demand for accountability over the alleged remarks.

The reported detention has raised expectations that the allegations will now be examined through the appropriate legal process. However, further details regarding the precise grounds of detention, the applicable legal provisions and the formal status of the case are awaited from the police authorities.

The controversy erupted after a video circulated widely on social media, allegedly showing Amir Sokin addressing a tribal youth from Tripura with remarks including “Chinese” and “chini chini”. Critics have described the alleged remarks as racially offensive and humiliating, arguing that they reinforce stereotypes about people from Northeast India.

The complainants have also raised concerns over the alleged distortion or mispronunciation of Tripura's name during the incident, further intensifying public anger.

The video prompted widespread criticism across Tripura, with many people demanding that the authorities take the matter seriously and ensure that the person responsible is held accountable under the law.

Several political and social organisations reportedly approached police stations in Agartala and elsewhere, seeking legal action. Among the organisations that raised the issue were the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), Twipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF), DYFI and TYFI, which approached the NCC and West Agartala police stations.

The controversy has attracted reactions from different political camps, including the CPI(M), Congress and Tipra Motha, reflecting the broad public sensitivity surrounding alleged racial discrimination against people from the Northeast.

Amid the mounting criticism, the content creator reportedly uploaded an apology video on social media, claiming that the incident was scripted.

The explanation, however, failed to satisfy many people in Tripura. Critics argued that describing a video as scripted does not automatically resolve questions about the nature of the language used, the dignity of the person featured or the possible consequences of content that is perceived as racially derogatory.

The central question raised by critics has been whether an apology on social media should be sufficient to close a controversy involving alleged racial humiliation.

Several voices have maintained that the circumstances in which the video was recorded, the intention behind the remarks and the potential impact on the individual concerned should be examined objectively by the competent authorities.

They have also stressed that the accused must be dealt with in accordance with the law and that the investigation should establish the facts without prejudging the outcome.
