A journalist and his family were allegedly attacked in the Ramnagar area of the state capital after objecting to a bamboo barricade that was obstructing public movement on a road during the Durga Puja festivities. The incident has triggered widespread condemnation and raised serious questions about the alleged unauthorised closure of public roads in the name of festival arrangements.
Journalist Abhijit Bhattacharjee and his son were allegedly assaulted near Yuba Sangha Club on Ramnagar Road No. 1 during the early hours of October 21. According to the complaint, the confrontation began when Bhattacharjee attempted to remove a bamboo barricade and proceed on his motorcycle.
The alleged attack has sparked concern over whether ordinary citizens can question road closures and traffic arrangements without facing intimidation or violence.
According to the allegations, several drunken youths verbally abused the journalist before the situation escalated into a physical assault. When his son attempted to record the incident on his mobile phone, the device was allegedly snatched and smashed. Both father and son reportedly sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered at West Agartala Police Station, and one person has reportedly been detained. Police have stated that steps are being taken to apprehend the other accused.
The incident has also brought the alleged unauthorised placement of bamboo barricades and 'No Entry' boards on roads in Ramnagar into focus. Residents have complained that such restrictions created difficulties for ordinary commuters during the festive period.
Questions have further been raised over traffic arrangements on the Firebriged Chowmuhani via Durga Chowmuhani–Barjala road, which, according to complaints, was also closed to traffic despite a notification by the West Tripura District Magistrate stating that it would remain open.
The incident has renewed demands for strict enforcement of traffic rules, accountability for unauthorised road closures and a fair investigation into the alleged assault.
