Congress Legislature Party Leader and MLA Birajit Sinha has urged Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha to intervene immediately and ensure strict legal action over an alleged incident of racial harassment and humiliation involving a youth from Tripura, reportedly captured in a video circulating on social media.
In a letter dated October 21, Sinha expressed deep concern over the incident and called for coordinated action by the state government in consultation with the Central Government to ensure that the matter is addressed in accordance with the law.
In his communication to the Chief Minister, the Congress leader referred to an individual identified as Amir Shaukeen in connection with the circulating video and condemned the alleged behaviour towards the youth. He called for appropriate legal action against anyone found responsible following a fair investigation.
Sinha emphasised that no Indian citizen should be made to feel like an outsider in their own country because of their physical appearance, ethnic identity or regional background. He said people from Tripura and the entire Northeast are equal citizens of India and deserve the same dignity, respect and protection as every other Indian.
The MLA expressed particular distress over the reported statement by the youth that he was not Chinese but belonged to Tripura. According to Sinha, no citizen should have to defend their national identity to avoid humiliation or discrimination.
He stressed that racial profiling, harassment and intimidation must not be normalised in society and called for a firm response to incidents that undermine the dignity and security of people from the Northeast.
Referring to the tragic death of Anjel Chakma from Tripura following an attack in Dehradun, Sinha said the case remained a painful reminder of the consequences of racial hatred and prejudice against people from the region. He argued that incidents threatening the safety and dignity of Northeastern citizens must not be ignored.
The Congress Legislature Party leader requested the Chief Minister to take up the matter with the appropriate authorities and ensure that the allegations are investigated fairly and that legal action is taken wherever warranted by the evidence.
Sinha also stated that, as an elected representative, he considered it his responsibility to raise his voice whenever the dignity, security and fundamental rights of the people of Tripura were threatened. He urged the state government to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserved and ensure that justice was pursued without fear or favour.
