Allegations of racial harassment against a young man from Tripura in Delhi have sparked widespread concern and reactions on social media, bringing renewed attention to the issue of racial discrimination faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country.

According to a report, allegations have surfaced against self-described content creator Amir Shaukeen over a video circulating on social media. The video has drawn criticism over the alleged mocking of a young man from Tripura by referring to him as “Chinese”. The caption accompanying the video reportedly claims that the young man was harassed in Delhi.

The incident has triggered strong reactions, with questions being raised about the treatment of people from the Northeast and the use of social media content to ridicule individuals on the basis of their physical appearance or ethnic identity.

However, the full circumstances surrounding the incident, the identity and account of the alleged victim, and the complete context of the video could not be independently established from the information available. The allegations against Shaukeen have not been independently verified, and his response was not available at the time of writing.

Jitendra Chaudhury Demands Unconditional Apology

Reacting strongly to the controversy, CPI(M) leader and Tripura Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury took to social media to condemn the alleged conduct and demand an unconditional apology from Amir Shaukeen.

Chaudhury asserted that the alleged remarks had not only insulted an individual from Tripura but had also hurt the dignity of the state's indigenous population, commonly referred to as the Tiprasa community.

In his strongly worded statement, Chaudhury called upon Shaukeen to apologise to the people of Tripura and the Tiprasa community without delay. He maintained that the alleged incident should not be dismissed as a joke or treated as harmless entertainment.

The opposition leader also demanded a sincere and unconditional apology to the individual concerned, emphasising that public humiliation based on ethnic identity was unacceptable.

Chaudhury further urged Delhi Police to take strict action against those responsible for racial harassment, arguing that appropriate action was necessary to discourage similar incidents in the future.
