Agartala witnessed an improvement in traffic management on Durga Puja Ashtami evening compared with Saptami, with better regulation of vehicle movement and efforts to maintain orderly traffic across several parts of the city. While certain restrictions continued to draw concerns from sections of the public, the overall arrangements appeared better managed than the previous evening, highlighting the importance of continued coordination between traffic personnel, the administration and puja organisers.

Traffic management during Durga Puja is a challenging responsibility, particularly in Agartala, where thousands of people visit different pandals throughout the evening. Controlling congestion, protecting pedestrians, preventing accidents and keeping emergency routes accessible require careful planning and continuous monitoring.

Compared with Saptami evening, the traffic arrangements on Ashtami appeared to reflect improvements in managing vehicle movement and maintaining road discipline. The experience also demonstrated that effective traffic control can help reduce congestion and make movement more orderly during peak festive hours.

However, the experience of some visitors suggests that there remains scope for further improvement, particularly in ensuring convenient access to puja pandals for senior citizens, families with young children and people who find it difficult to walk long distances.

In a social media update, Agartala Traffic Police described the traffic situation as smooth, stating that pandal-hoppers and pedestrians were moving comfortably and that traffic was being managed efficiently, with no congestion reported.

The department also advised citizens to rely on official updates and avoid believing or circulating unverified information.

The update reflects the department’s efforts to maintain orderly traffic movement during one of the busiest evenings of the festive season. Compared with the difficulties reported on Saptami, the improved arrangements on Ashtami indicate the value of advance planning and active traffic regulation.

Nevertheless, traffic conditions can vary from one locality to another and at different times of the evening. While the department reported smooth movement, some visitors raised concerns about vehicle restrictions at certain entry points.

According to accounts received by this news organisation, vehicles were stopped at some entry points approximately two to three kilometres from parts of the central city. Some families travelling with small children and elderly members reportedly found the remaining distance difficult to cover on foot.

Restrictions were also reported on the Battala–Nagerjala–Durga Chowmuhani–Barjala road stretch, prompting residents to seek clarification about the applicable traffic arrangements and public access provisions.

These concerns do not diminish the importance of the traffic department’s efforts. Rather, they highlight an opportunity to make an improving system even more responsive to the needs of different categories of visitors.

Where crowd conditions permit, designated drop-off points for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families with young children could improve accessibility without compromising pedestrian safety.

The improvement observed on Ashtami compared with Saptami is encouraging.
