Aspirants who qualified in the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) Paper-I have temporarily withdrawn their sit-in protest outside Siksha Bhavan here following an appeal by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and his assurance that their demand for recruitment would be addressed after Durga Puja.
The aspirants had launched the agitation on Thursday, demanding the publication of the merit list for undergraduate teacher (UGT) recruitment and a clear timeline for the appointment process.
Dr Saha urged the protesters to have faith in the government, saying the authorities were aware of their concerns and would take necessary steps to resolve the issue. He also said continuing the demonstration would cause inconvenience to the public and the protesters.
“I would urge them to have faith. I do not think there is any need to continue the agitation in this manner. The government is aware of the matter, and we will certainly do what is necessary,” he said.
Following the chief minister’s appeal and assurance that the issue would be addressed after Durga Puja, the aspirants decided to suspend their agitation for the time being.
Earlier on Friday, a delegation of protesters met Tripura Teachers’ Recruitment Board (TRBT) chairman Pratyush Ranjan Deb and sought clarification on the delay in the recruitment process and the legal complications cited by the authorities.
The aspirants alleged that repeated appeals had failed to elicit a definite timeline for publication of the merit list. They also sought details of the pending court cases that have held up the recruitment process.
According to official sources, the recruitment process has been stalled due to legal complications, with the matter pending before the Tripura High Court. Several other cases concerning the correctness of questions have also been filed.
Recently, the High Court directed the TRBT to increase the marks of some aspirants who had challenged the correctness of an answer in the final answer key published by the recruitment body.
Officials said implementing the direction could require a revision of the entire merit list, as around 3,000 aspirants had attempted the question in question.
Sources in the department said efforts were under way to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
The government has recently distributed appointment offers to TET Paper-II qualifiers and candidates selected through the Selection Test for Graduate Teachers (STGT). TET Paper-I, in contrast, is conducted for recruitment of undergraduate teachers for elementary schools.
