India’s 11th president , ‘Bharat Ratna’ A.P.J.Abdul Kalam was one of the leading scientists and technocrats of independent India who had made sterling contribution to scientific and technological development of the country alongside stalwarts like Dr C.V.Raman, Satyendra Nath Bose, Meghnad Saha and Homi Jahangir Bhava. As a scientist and aerospace engineer he had specialized in satellite and missile technology and had fathered India’s emergence as a space power and missile super power and had long served as the chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and advisor to the prime minister . Kalam had been conferred the highest civilian award of the country ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1997 for his ground-breaking contribution to science and technology in India but, above all this, he was a teacher who was very fond of students and would like to interact with them. This is the reason why his birthday on October 15 (1931) has been notified as the ‘Students Day’ by the government of India though institutions across the country show little interest in formally observing the day.
In this regard, Agartala Public School launched by leading editor Arun Nath is an exception as the school which boasts of 15 awardees in mathematics Olympiad observed the day with a heart-warming function in Agartala Press Club , as in the previous years. The minister for science and technology in Tripura government Animesh Debbarma who himself is a highly qualified technocrat and professional graced the occasion as chief guest. Alongside the minister the dais of the function was adorned by retired chemistry professor of MBB college , educationist and philanthropist Purnendu Kanti Das, veteran journalist Sekhar Datta , the living spirit behind the Agartala Public School Arun Nath and the president of the school managing committee Dr Sajal Nath.
The programme began with singing in chorus of the school anthem by the students of the school , followed by speeches. In an enlightening speech mlnister Animesh Debbarma paid tributes to the Agartala Public School authority and advised the students to be serious in their studies , specially in the study of science. Animesh’s well-delivered speech was accepted well by the students and guardians of the school. While the founder of the school Arun Nath appealed to the guardians and students to be more committed to the school and studies, veteran journalist Sekhar Datta urged upon the students to inculcate the values of filial piety , preservation of traditional culture and values and also asked the guardians to restrict the use of Android mobile phone, social media and harmful programmes telecast on cable TV channels. Professor (retired) Purnendu Kanti Das also appreciated the performance of the school and offered his services to the Agartala Public School at need .
In between speeches there were cultural programmes like dances with delicate movements by the girl students of the school. The vote of thanks was finally given by the president of the school managing committee Dr Sajal Nath and the students and guardians of the school also expressed their gratitude and thanks to the school authority.
