In a setback of sorts for struggling Congress in Melaghar Nagar Panchayat area under Sonamura subdivision, the party’s womens front leader Laxmi Barman (52) has rejoined the BJP. The rejoining programme took place yesterday in Melaghar at the initiative of BJP’s Sonamura ‘Mandal’ committee president Shubhrajit Das and Sepahijala district president Prasenjit Ghosh. In the joining prgramme Laxmi Barman and her followers were formally welcomed by the BJP leaders into the party fold with a flag of BJP.

Speaking on the occasion Sonamura ‘Mandal’ president Shubhrajit Das said that joining of Laxmi Barman, a dynamic leader, would further strengthen the party and persuade the women political activists of Melaghar to throw in their lot with BJP. Laxmi Barman also spoke on the occasion and said that a truly nationalist force like BJP needs to be supported wholeheartedly by all patriotic Indians at a time when the country faces multifarious problems and threats from anti-national and fissiparous forces. She paid her tribute to the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi and declared her resolve to work for strengthening the BJP at the grassroot level.

Sources from Melaghar said that Laxmi Barman had one stage had been a leading figure of Congress in Melaghar and for her involvement with Congress she and her family had been persecuted by the then CVPI (M) leaders and workers. After the BJP had come to power in Centre in 2014 she had joined the BJP as she had got no recognition from her original party, the Congress. But out of frustration with the local BJP leaders she had stopped her political activism and remained confined in her home. Finally Shubhrajit Das, the BJP’s ‘Mandal’ president in Sonamura persuaded and convinced her to rejoin the party and start her organizational work which happened yesterday.
