The four-day ‘Durga Puja’ , greatest annual religious festival of Hindu Bengalis ,is all set to commence from the night of ‘Sashthi’ on October 16 , that is Friday. While the whole state wears a festive colour and ambience on account of the ‘Puja’ is the erosion of traditional values and purity of rituals in the worship of the ‘Mother Goddess’. The worship of Mother Goddess has been continuing in various forms has been continuing in India since the vedic age but what is visibly and volubly lacking in the din and bustle of festivities and celebrations is the sacredness and purity of the worship that showers divine bounties on the devotees.
Amidst this loss of purity and erosion of values the worship of the Mother Goddess in the residence of Piyari Master garden area of Jaynagar continuing since the year 1950 stands out prominently for the true spirit of the worship based on scriptural injunctions. The late Sanskrit scholar Sudhir Chandra Bhattacharjee who was also conferred recognition and award by the government of India had introduced this ‘Puja’ in the Piyari Master garden area after it had to be shifted from Mymensing in the wake of the bloody partition of Bengal in 1947.
As in several previous years Lipika Bhattacharya , wife of late Sudhir Chandra Bhattacharjee’s son Sajal Bhattacharjee, has been organizing this traditional ‘Puja’ over the past several years following the death of her husband. The striking difference of the ‘Thakurbari Puja’ is the purity and sacredness of rituals attached to this in stark contrast with the other worships organized bu clubs. Speaking on this Lipika Bhattacharjee said that the tradition of the ‘Puja’ has been kept alive and this year will be no exception and all the rituals and chanting of hymns in the ‘Puja’ is based on what is described in the hoary Hindu classic , the ‘Matsya Purana’. She has invited all to attend the ‘Puja’ and partake of the ‘Prasadam’.
