The ongoing standoff between advocates and the judiciary at the Gomati District Court in Udaipur has intensified, with members of the Gomati District Bar Association continuing their pen-down strike for the 13th consecutive day on Wednesday. The advocates have demanded the removal of the present district judge, Ravi Dhaiya, and the appointment of a new judge, alleging repeated instances of disrespectful conduct, arbitrary decisions and irregularities in judicial proceedings.

At a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, representatives of the Bar Association detailed their grievances against the judge and explained why they had decided to suspend their professional activities. They maintained that their protest was intended to safeguard the dignity of the legal profession, ensure respectful treatment of advocates and protect the interests of litigants who depend on the district court for timely justice.

The prolonged agitation has disrupted the normal functioning of the court, leaving ordinary litigants in a difficult position. Many people, including those travelling from distant areas, have reportedly been compelled to return without obtaining effective hearings, while the delay in the disposal of cases has added to their financial and personal difficulties.

Sumanta Chakraborty, president of the Gomati District Bar Association, alleged that Judge Ravi Dhaiya had repeatedly behaved in a manner that the advocates considered insulting and inconsistent with the dignity expected in judicial proceedings.

According to the Bar Association, its members had faced humiliating treatment in open court, including the alleged use of derogatory expressions such as “idiot” and “traitors” while addressing advocates. The association also alleged that inappropriate remarks had been directed at women advocates, raising concerns about professional dignity, equality and the maintenance of a respectful courtroom environment.

The advocates further expressed dissatisfaction with certain judicial decisions and alleged that reasonable requests for exemption from personal appearance had been rejected in some cases despite what they described as genuine circumstances. They also raised questions about the cancellation of bail and the subsequent issuance of warrants, alleging that procedural requirements had not always been followed appropriately.

These allegations were presented by the Bar Association during the press conference. No response from Judge Ravi Dhaiya to the allegations was available in the information presented at the press conference.

A significant aspect of the ongoing dispute is the reported intervention by the Tripura High Court. The Bar Association stated that the matter had been brought to the attention of the Chief Justice and the Registrar General of the High Court through written representations.

The reported communication with the higher judiciary has raised hopes among the protesting advocates that the dispute will receive appropriate institutional attention. However, the association expressed disappointment that no effective or visible resolution had emerged by Wednesday.

The advocates' demand for intervention highlights the importance of the High Court's supervisory role in ensuring the smooth administration of justice, addressing legitimate institutional grievances and maintaining public confidence in the judicial system.
