Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha inaugurated the Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Udaipur in Gomati district, marking an important step towards strengthening healthcare infrastructure, promoting traditional Indian medicine and expanding medical education opportunities in Tripura.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by State Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, MLA Abhishek Debroy, Udaipur Municipal Council Chairman Sital Chandra Majumder, Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lathar, and other senior administrative and health officials. The programme was presided over by Gomati Zilla Parishad Chairperson Debal Debroy.
The establishment of the government Ayurvedic medical college and hospital is expected to contribute significantly to the expansion of healthcare services in Gomati district and adjoining areas. Besides providing opportunities for students interested in pursuing medical education in Ayurveda, the institution is expected to strengthen access to traditional healthcare services for local residents.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Manik Saha underscored the importance of developing healthcare infrastructure while promoting Ayurveda, one of India's oldest systems of medicine. He emphasised the need to expand access to Ayurvedic treatment, increase public awareness about traditional medical practices and ensure that people understand the appropriate use of different systems of healthcare.
The Chief Minister highlighted that Ayurveda has an important place in India's medical heritage, particularly in areas such as preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyle practices, dietary habits and the maintenance of physical and mental well-being. Observances such as Ayurveda Day also seek to promote awareness of Ayurvedic principles, their appropriate application and the importance of responsible healthcare practices.
The new institution is expected to play a dual role in healthcare delivery and medical education. In addition to extending treatment facilities, it could create new opportunities for students, teaching professionals and researchers in the field of Ayurveda. The integration of education, research and clinical services will be important for developing the institution into a significant centre for traditional medicine in the state.
For residents of Gomati district and neighbouring areas, the availability of an Ayurvedic medical college and hospital could improve access to healthcare services closer to home. The institution may also help reduce the need for patients to travel to distant locations for specialised consultation, subject to the availability of appropriate facilities, qualified practitioners and necessary clinical services.
The inauguration also reflects the broader importance of strengthening healthcare infrastructure beyond major urban centres. Developing medical institutions in districts such as Gomati can contribute to more balanced regional development, provided that adequate staffing, equipment, medicines, patient services and supporting infrastructure are ensured.
Ayurveda's growing role in healthcare education and research also offers scope for future development. With appropriate academic facilities, qualified faculty and research support, the college could help create new opportunities for students and contribute to the scientific study and responsible practice of traditional medicine.
The long-term success of the institution will depend on the effective development of its facilities, the quality of medical education, the availability of qualified healthcare professionals and the delivery of accessible, patient-centred services. Ensuring that Ayurvedic treatment is provided according to appropriate clinical standards, alongside timely referrals to other medical systems when necessary, will remain essential.
The inauguration of the Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Udaipur is therefore an important development for Tripura's healthcare and medical education sectors. Its impact will ultimately be measured by the opportunities it creates for students, the quality of treatment available to patients and its contribution to the overall strengthening of healthcare services in Gomati district and beyond.
