As part of the evil and familiar continuum, another hapless Hindu man-this time a Harijan sweeper-was brutally stabbed to death last night in Kashtha Ghar area in the heart of Sylhet district town in northern Bangladesh. The slain man named Hriday Kumar Harijan (35) is survived by his wife Pinki Rani Harijan, four children and younger brother Ajay Kumar Harijan. Sources from Bangladesh said that the Kashtha Ghar area in Sylhet had in the past been a posh area of habitation of aristocratic Hindus but in the post-partition era the communalised Muslims had hounded out almost the entire Hindu community from the area and the erstwhile East Pakistan government had converted the area into a colony of backward Hindu Harijans.
Giving details of what happened last night , sources quoted slain Hriday Kumar Harijan’s younger brother Ajay Kumar Harijan as saying that a Muslim miscreant of a nearby area, named Md Amin had been surreptitiously taking snaps of Hriday Kumar Harijan’s wife Pinki Rani on his mobile set as she was changing clothes before offering the evening ‘Puja’ at home. Having caught sight of this , Hriday Kumar strongly protested and engaged in a scuffle with miscreant Md Amin who left the place but called in some of this accomplices from other locations. Having gathered on the spot they dragged Hriday Kumar Harijan out of his colony home and inflicted multiple stab injuries on his body. As a result Hriday Kumar died on the spot from over-bleeding and tearing of inner organs of his body.
After the Muslim miscreants had left the place warning Hriday Kumar’s family, Hriday’s younger brother took him to hospital where he was pronounced ‘brought dead’. Ajay Kumar Harijan told sources who gave the news that he had filed a case with local police station but expected no action by the corrupt and communalised police. The brutal murder of Hriday Kumar Harijan has cast a shadow of grief and fear among the minuscule minority Hindus in Sylhet town.
