A small group of Gen Z students on Sunday launched a protest in the Circuit House area of Agartala, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar. Although the number of participants was limited, the protest marked the resumption of an agitation over the demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation in Tripura.
The demonstrators, who were reportedly below 20 to 22 years of age, included students from schools, colleges and universities. The identity of the organisers and whether any organisation or group was supporting the protest remained unclear.
One of the participants told tripurainfo.com that the students intended to continue their agitation until Gyanesh Kumar resigned from the post of Chief Election Commissioner. The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the prevailing situation in the country, claiming that many developments were not going in the right direction.
The students appealed to democratic-minded citizens across Tripura to join their movement, which they described as an effort to protect democratic institutions in the country. They said their campaign would continue in pursuit of their demand.
The protest was notable for the participation of young students, even though the gathering remained small.
The development adds a new local dimension to the students’ campaign, with the coming days likely to indicate whether the agitation remains limited to a small group or attracts wider participation in Tripura.
