Repeated Assurances Fail to Ensure Road Repairs on Khowai–Agartala and Teliamura–Agartala Highways Ahead of Durga Puja

Despite repeated assurances that repairs would be completed on the Kamalpur–Khowai–Agartala and Teliamura–Champaknagar–Agartala stretches of National Highway-8 before Durga Puja, several sections remain in poor condition. With the reported October 10 deadline expired, concerns are growing over traffic movement and the authorities’ festival preparedness at Agartala city too.

Meanwhile, the highways linking Khowai, Kamalpur, Teliamura, Champaknagar and Jirania with Agartala are crucial during the festival, when thousands travel to the capital to visit decorated pandals and join family celebrations. Increased private, public and two-wheeler traffic could lead to longer journeys, bottlenecks and significant inconvenience if damaged sections remain unrepaired.

Several roads within Agartala city also reportedly remain unfinished. Traffic concerns have intensified around the Old Motor Stand, where multiple commercial operations have begun in a multi-storey building on land designated for car parking, raising questions about parking capacity and traffic management.

The issue has gained further significance following a deputation submitted by the Jirania Sub-Divisional Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) to the District Magistrate of West Tripura on October 10. The organisation demanded urgent repairs to the dilapidated highway, construction of a flyover and improvements to drainage infrastructure, highlighting the difficulties faced by ordinary commuters and vehicle drivers.

According to the organisation, the stretch of National Highway-8 from Sadhupur in Champaknagar towards Ranirgaon is in particularly poor condition and requires immediate attention. The committee urged the administration to complete the necessary repairs before Durga Puja, when the volume of traffic on roads connecting the subdivisions with Agartala is expected to increase considerably.

The CITU committee also demanded the construction of a flyover between Khowai and Champaknagar to improve connectivity and reduce travel difficulties. It called for drainage channels on both sides of the national highway, arguing that an improved drainage system could reduce waterlogging during the monsoon and help prevent further deterioration of the road surface.
