Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath performed the Bhumi Pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) on Friday for the proposed restoration and modernisation work of the Gumati Hydroelectric Project at Dumbur in Gomati district. The ceremony marked an important step towards the revival of Tripura’s only hydroelectric power station, which was severely damaged by the devastating floods of 2024. The restoration project, estimated to cost Rs.100 crore, aims to bring the plant back into operation with a targeted generation capacity of 10–11 MW.

The initiative is part of the state government's efforts to restore the ageing power infrastructure and strengthen Tripura's electricity-generation capacity.

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has conducted technical studies in collaboration with the state authorities to assess the restoration and modernisation requirements of the long-standing Gumti Hydroelectric Project.

The state government has proposed an investment of approximately Rs.100 crore to restore the damaged facility and improve its power-generation capacity. The proposed modernisation aims to raise generation to around 10–11 megawatts (MW), compared with its original installed capacity of 15 MW across three generating units.

According to the restoration plan, physical work is scheduled to begin in December 2026, subject to the completion of the necessary technical assessments and preparatory procedures.
