A disturbing pattern of alleged retaliation through the destruction of private property and livelihood-generating assets has raised serious concerns in Tripura. Rubber plantations, agricultural land, fish ponds and floriculture gardens are among the assets that can become vulnerable when personal disputes or political rivalries allegedly turn into acts of vengeance.
The concern is that, instead of resolving grievances through democratic means or legal channels, some individuals may be resorting to the destruction of assets belonging to people they consider opponents or rivals.
However, the allegation that this practice has increased across the state.
In a recent incident reported from the Sonamura area on October 8, 53 rubber saplings belonging to Maman Mia were allegedly cut down by unidentified miscreants during the night at Baishnabjhar village, under Jatrapur police station in the Boxanagar region.
According to the information provided by the complainant and local sources, Maman Mia had planted the rubber saplings on approximately half a kani of land around two months earlier. The family reportedly hoped that the plantation would provide an additional source of income and improve its financial condition in the future.
Maman Mia reportedly lives with his wife, two children and elderly mother. The destruction of the young plants has caused concern for the family because the plantation represented an investment in its future livelihood.
According to the complaint, the incident took place at around 10 pm on Wednesday. After waking up and inspecting the plantation, Maman Mia allegedly discovered that all 53 rubber saplings had been cut down.
The complainant reportedly informed his neighbour, Habil Mia, about the incident and subsequently approached Jatrapur police station to report the matter.
According to the information provided, police visited the reported scene after receiving information about the incident. The complainant has sought a detailed investigation to determine who destroyed the rubber saplings and why.
The incident has also drawn attention to the wider concern that the destruction of productive assets can cause serious hardship for rural families. Whether involving rubber plantations, agricultural crops, fish ponds or floriculture gardens, deliberate damage to livelihood-generating property can undermine economic security and create fear within local communities.
