The Tripura State Election Commission has begun preparations for elections to 21 urban local bodies, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation, as the terms of the existing bodies are due to end on December 9.
State Election Commissioner P K Chakravarti said a preparatory meeting was held in Agartala on Thursday with DGP in-charge G S Rao, district magistrates, superintendents of police and officials from various departments.
The meeting reviewed the administrative and logistical arrangements required for conducting the elections before the expiry of the existing bodies' terms.
“The tenure of the existing urban local bodies ends on December 9. Therefore, the State Election Commission has to conduct the elections before that,” Chakravarti said.
He said the Urban Development Department had completed the process of finalising polling stations after issuing the draft and final notifications. The preparation of electoral rolls is also underway, with the draft rolls already published. The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on October 15.
The commission will announce the election schedule through a formal notification. Chakravarti did not disclose a possible polling date, saying it could be announced only after the notification is issued.
The meeting also focused on security arrangements and the preparedness of the police machinery.
Rao said officials were briefed on the constitutional provisions, laws, rules and instructions applicable to the conduct of elections. The meeting also reviewed key stages of the electoral process and the deadlines for completing various tasks.
The police are assessing the manpower required for the elections and working on deployment arrangements, Rao said.
He said Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles had adequate personnel for the polls. Central Armed Police Force companies already deployed in the state would also be available for election-related duties.
However, Rao said there was no provision for additional CAPF companies to be brought from outside the state specifically for the urban local body elections.
The police would therefore prepare the deployment plan using the forces available within the state, he said.
