A new commercial complex-cum-multi-level car parking facility, PRM Centre Point Mall, was inaugurated at Old Motorstand Road in Agartala on Thursday, marking another step towards modernising the city's urban infrastructure and creating additional commercial space in the heart of the capital.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who inaugurated the facility, described the project as a new milestone in Agartala's urban development and infrastructure. In a post on his Facebook page, the Chief Minister said the modern facility would help address the city's parking problems, improve traffic management and provide better commercial services to citizens.
According to the Chief Minister, the project reflects the State Government's commitment to developing a more organised, accessible and modern Agartala.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Datta, Corporator and Central Zonal Chairman Ratna Datta, Secretary to the Government of Tripura Kiran Gitte, CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) Dr. G. S. Nayak, Dr. Milind Ramteke, IAS, Saju Vaheed A., IAS, and other senior officials.
The opening of PRM Centre Point Mall is being projected as an initiative that combines multi-level parking with commercial facilities, with the objective of making better use of a strategically located urban property while simultaneously addressing parking shortages in central Agartala.
While the project has been welcomed by sections of citizens who believe that combining parking and commercial activities can make better use of valuable urban land, questions have also emerged regarding the proportion of space actually dedicated to parking compared with commercial facilities.
Some public reactions on social media questioned whether a facility presented primarily as a solution to Agartala's parking problem provides sufficient parking capacity when compared with the substantial commercial space visible within the complex.
After visiting the Mall many observers questioned whether, in the name of creating a car-parking facility, the project could ultimately provide greater benefit to private commercial interests. However, the commenter also acknowledged that this was a personal perception and that the actual outcome would become clearer with time.
Others defended the project, arguing that the presence of a commercial complex alongside parking facilities would ensure better utilisation of the property and provide benefits to the general public.
The inauguration generated considerable interest among citizens, with some visitors reportedly arriving to explore the newly opened commercial premises, including its shops and escalator facilities.
Supporters of the project described it as a welcome addition to Agartala's urban infrastructure, while others focused on its potential to provide a new organised location for parking.
There were also comments describing the facility as a possible new parking destination for public vehicles, including autos and e-rickshaws, although the exact categories of vehicles officially permitted to use the facility, as well as parking charges and operational arrangements, would need to be clarified by the authorities.
The project's success, however, is likely to be judged not merely by the appearance of the new commercial complex but by how effectively it addresses the city's longstanding parking and traffic-management problems.
