A fresh phase of political realignment appears to be emerging in Tripura following the results of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections, with Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s announcement about stepping away from active politics adding another dimension to the evolving political situation in the state.
Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of Tipra Motha, has reportedly announced that he will no longer remain active in electoral politics after the coming month. At the same time, he has indicated that he would continue working for the interests of the Tiprasa people from outside active politics. His announcement has triggered fresh discussions among political parties about the possible future direction of Tipra Motha and its political strategy.
The development has assumed significance because it comes immediately after the TTAADC Village Committee election results, in which Tipra Motha emerged as the dominant political force across the ADC areas. The results, however, have also produced several instances of local-level political combinations that do not strictly follow the existing BJP-Tipra Motha-IPFT alliance structure.
According to reports from different ADC areas, CPI(M) and Tipra Motha candidates have joined hands in some Village Committees to form governing bodies, while in other places BJP-backed or independent members have played a role in determining the composition of the committees. These local arrangements have started a fresh debate over whether the electoral arithmetic at the Village Committee level could eventually influence the broader political equations in Tripura.
One such development has been reported from Uttar Dhanichhara, under Dhanpur Assembly constituency in Sepahijala district where the Village Committee election produced a fractured verdict. Out of nine seats, BJP won four, CPI(M) three and Tipra Motha two. Following the result, the CPI(M) and Tipra Motha members reportedly decided to come together to form the Village Committee. The two sides also moved to communicate their decision to local residents.
Another report from Patichari, Dhanichhara and Dainchara in North and Unakoti Districts ADC area described a similar post-poll arrangement in which Tipra Motha and CPI(M) members came together to form a Village Committee despite the broader political rivalry between the two parties.
The developments are particularly significant because the TTAADC Village Committee elections had been viewed as a major test of the political strength of the parties in the tribal areas. The results gave Tipra Motha a clear advantage, while BJP also secured a substantial number of seats. CPI(M), Congress and IPFT won comparatively fewer seats, although CPI(M) remained a significant opposition force in several pockets.
The election outcome has also raised questions about the future of the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance in the tribal areas. Tipra Motha had entered into an alliance with the BJP at the state level, while IPFT is also part of the ruling coalition. However, the formation of individual Village Committees through combinations involving Tipra Motha and CPI(M) demonstrates that local electoral arithmetic can sometimes differ considerably from state-level alliance arrangements.
The political significance of Pradyot’s announcement has therefore become an additional subject of discussion.
