Two days after the declaration of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee election results, the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT on Wednesday held a joint press conference in Agartala, projecting the alliance's electoral performance as a mandate for development and continued political coordination in the ADC areas.
The joint press conference was held against the backdrop of allegations of clashes, attacks and counter-attacks reported from different areas following the election results. However, representatives of the three parties did not issue any specific response regarding the allegations of political violence or attacks involving supporters of the rival parties.
The leaders instead maintained that the Village Committee elections had been completed peacefully overall. They acknowledged that minor incidents of confrontation or political clashes can occur during elections, but said there had been no major violence that could undermine the overall conduct of the election.
According to the leaders, the results demonstrated the strength of the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT alliance in the ADC areas. They said the alliance had secured a substantial number of Village Committee seats and would now focus on development-oriented activities and strengthening the functioning of the village-level institutions.
The joint conference also highlighted the alliance's combined electoral performance. According to figures presented by the leaders, out of the 4,597 Village Committee seats, the three alliance partners secured a significant share of the seats. The BJP claimed 859 seats, while IPFT secured 33 seats. Tipra Motha separately claimed 3,428 seats. The CPI(M), Independents and Congress were also reported to have won seats in the election.
The leaders said the election results reflected the support enjoyed by the alliance among sections of the ADC electorate and described the outcome as an indication of the political direction emerging in the tribal areas.
At the same time, Tipra Motha central leadership and former minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia reportedly sought to project the party's performance as an expression of the people's support for its political agenda. The party also maintained that its electoral strength would play an important role in the functioning of the Village Committees and future political developments in the ADC.
The joint press conference came at a time when allegations of post-election political confrontation have emerged from several areas. Opposition parties and local political groups have raised allegations of attacks, intimidation and political clashes involving supporters following the announcement of results. However, the three alliance partners did not directly address individual allegations or announce any specific inquiry into the reported incidents.
Instead, the BJP state's General Secretary Bipin Debbarma during the joint press conference stressed that the election process as a whole remained peaceful and that isolated incidents should not be portrayed as widespread violence. The leaders said small-scale incidents and counter-incidents can occur during elections and that the overall assessment should be based on the conduct of the entire electoral process.
The press conference also not focuses anything on the future functioning of the Village Committees. But the alliance leaders said the newly elected bodies should concentrate on development, implementation of government programmes, proper utilisation of allocated funds and addressing local infrastructure and public-service requirements.
