Three Royal Bengal tiger cubs have been born at the Sepahijala Zoological Park in Tripura, taking the facility’s tiger population to seven, forest officials said on Wednesday.
The cubs were born around August 30-31 to a tiger pair that had produced three cubs last year. One of the three cubs born last year died, while the other two survived and are now housed in a separate enclosure, officials said.
Sepahijala Zoo Director Siddhartha Debbarma said the newborn cubs were healthy and were being closely monitored by experts.
“All three are currently surviving and doing well. We are making every effort to observe and monitor them closely so that all of them survive,” Debbarma said.
He said neonatal deaths were a concern in zoos and the authorities were taking precautions to ensure the safety and care of the cubs.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests RK Samal said the cubs had been kept in the night shelter and were being allowed to remain with their mother only for limited periods.
The arrangement was made to protect the newborns from rain and ensure their healthy growth, Samal said.
“This year again, the pair has given birth to three tiger cubs, and they are quite healthy,” he said.
The two surviving cubs from last year’s litter are currently being kept in a separate enclosure, Samal said.
He said the zoo had received a pair of leopards, a pair of tigers and some other animals. The tiger pair produced three cubs last year and has now produced another three this year.
The latest births have increased the zoo’s tiger population to seven, officials said.
Samal also expressed hope that the birth of the cubs would attract more visitors and tourists to the zoological park.
