A special team of North Tripura District Police conducted a major anti-narcotics operation at the Anandabazar Naka Point under Dharmanagar subdivision and reportedly seized 194 kg of ganja, arresting two alleged drug traffickers in connection with the recovery.
According to police sources, the operation was launched on the basis of specific intelligence that a large quantity of narcotics was being transported from Kailashahar towards Anandabazar in a Bolero pickup vehicle. Acting on the information, senior police officials reached the Anandabazar Naka Point along with a special police team and initiated intensive checking of vehicles.
During the operation, police intercepted a white-coloured Bolero pickup reportedly loaded with empty fruit and vegetable trays. While conducting a detailed search of the vehicle, the police team allegedly noticed irregularities in the flooring of the rear cargo section. Suspecting the presence of a concealed compartment, the officers examined the floor more closely and reportedly discovered a specially constructed secret chamber beneath it.
The police subsequently used an electric cutter to open the false floor, following which a large quantity of ganja was allegedly recovered from the concealed compartment.
The seized contraband was weighed in the presence of the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate/administrative representative (DCM), a forensic team and independent witnesses. The total quantity was recorded at approximately 194 kg. A police official estimated the market value of the seized ganja at around Rs.20 lakh to Rs.25 lakh.
Two persons travelling in the vehicle were arrested at the spot. The arrested individuals have been identified as Jalal Uddin (27), a resident of Agartala, and Momin Mia (26), also from Agartala.
Dharmanagar Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the law relating to illegal possession and transportation of narcotic substances. The accused are being questioned as part of the investigation.
Police are also examining the broader network allegedly involved in the transportation of the contraband, including the source of the ganja, its intended destination and the possible involvement of other persons or an interstate or international trafficking network.
