The depredations of wild elephants in human habitations on the foothills of Atharomura hill range have been continuing unabated. In the latest such incident a big wild elephant left its natural abode and herd on top of the wooded Atharomura ranges and invaded the DM colony, Maharanipur and Netajinagar areas yesterday in the evening when people were either already at home or on their way back home. The big tusker wantonly destroyed a number of ‘Kuchha’ houses and vegetable fileds and croplands and consumed food. At the sight of the big tusker people of the area ran helter skelter for shelter .
Even as the destruction was going on people called up police and forest department personnel for help. After a long while when the elephant was on its way back the jawans of the forest protection force and a limited number of police arrived to chase the tusker way . At least two or three rounds were fired in the air and the elephant went back fast to where it had come from. The people expressed their ire against the forest department for failure to stop inroads of wild elephants in areas of human habitation.
