A fresh political controversy has emerged in Tripura over an alleged understanding between the Tipra Motha Party and the BJP, with developments in the Uttar Dhanicherra area under Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district bringing the issue into sharper focus. According to allegations circulating in political circles, the Tipra Motha leadership had reached an understanding with the BJP in the area, while simultaneously maintaining a different political position before its Left-backed opponents. The controversy reportedly intensified after the outcome of a recent political development in the Uttar Dhanicherra Panchayat area became public.
The allegations centre on claims that Tipra Motha had extended support to the BJP in the political contest, despite its leaders publicly maintaining that the party had not entered into any such arrangement at the local level. The development has triggered questions about the nature and extent of the BJP–Tipra Motha understanding, particularly at the grassroots level.
The political arithmetic in the area has also attracted attention. According to the information available Uttar Dhanicherra, out of nine seats in the concerned area, the BJP secured four, Tipra Motha won two, while the CPI(M) secured three seats. The result has subsequently become a subject of political discussion, with questions being raised over whether the apparent division of seats reflected an informal understanding between the two parties.
The controversy has become more significant because Tipra Motha has been an important political ally of the BJP-led government in Tripura, while the CPI(M) and other opposition parties have continued to challenge the ruling alliance on various issues. Any allegation of local-level seat adjustment or political understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha therefore has the potential to generate wider political debate over the future strategy of the alliance.
Political observers say the issue is particularly noteworthy because Tipra Motha has historically projected itself as a distinct political force representing the interests of indigenous people of Tripura. At the same time, the party's alliance with the BJP has increasingly brought it into the larger political framework of the ruling coalition. The latest controversy has consequently raised questions over how far the alliance extends at the grassroots level and whether local electoral arrangements are being made beyond what is publicly acknowledged by the leadership.
Opposition circles are expected to use the episode to question the political positioning of both parties. The CPI(M), which continues to maintain a significant organisational presence in several parts of the state, may seek clarification on whether the BJP and Tipra Motha have entered into informal electoral arrangements in areas where they are officially contesting separately.
