In a significant relief for Durga Puja organisers across Agartala, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to waive electricity bills of up to 5 kW for eligible Durga Puja clubs and organisers within the municipal area during the Durga Puja festivities.
The decision was discussed at a high-level meeting held at the Puranigam office on Tuesday, where officials reviewed preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations and measures to ensure that the festival can be conducted smoothly, safely and without disruption.
The meeting was attended by Tripura Power Minister Ratna Lal Nath, Agartala Puranigam Mayor Dipak Majumder, councillors, senior AMC officials and representatives of different departments associated with civic and festival management.
According to the decision, Puja committees and clubs organising Durga Puja within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area will be eligible for an electricity-bill waiver of up to 5 kilowatts. The move is expected to provide considerable financial relief to Puja organisers, many of whom depend on donations and contributions from local residents and businesses to meet the growing costs of organising the festival.
The decision comes at a time when Durga Puja has increasingly evolved beyond a religious celebration into one of Tripura's largest social and cultural gatherings. Every year, thousands of people visit Puja pandals across Agartala, while clubs and Puja committees invest substantial amounts in lighting, decorations, cultural programmes, security arrangements and other infrastructure.
During Tuesday's meeting, the authorities also discussed several other important aspects of Puja management, including water supply, road repairs, uninterrupted electricity services, drainage arrangements, sanitation and illumination.
The AMC authorities instructed the concerned departments to complete necessary road repair and civic works before the main days of the festival so that devotees and visitors do not face difficulties while moving through different parts of the city. Particular emphasis was placed on maintaining adequate street lighting and ensuring that electricity connections remain stable throughout the festival period.
Officials also discussed the need for coordinated arrangements between the civic body, electricity authorities, police and Puja committees to prevent any disruption during the festival. Given the large crowds expected at major Puja locations, special attention is also being given to traffic movement, public safety and emergency response arrangements.
Mayor Dipak Majumder reportedly emphasised that the objective of the civic administration is to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy Durga Puja in a safe, peaceful and festive environment. The Puranigam has been working on a comprehensive civic preparedness plan covering sanitation, roads, drainage, lighting and other essential services.
The electricity-bill waiver is being viewed as one of the notable initiatives aimed at supporting local Puja organisers.
