Tripura has received a major boost to Ayurvedic medical education and healthcare infrastructure with the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) issuing a Letter of Permission (LoP) for the establishment of the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Tepania in Udaipur, Gomati district.
Announcing the development today, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said the proposed institution will have an intake capacity of 60 undergraduate seats in Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS).
The Chief Minister described the approval as an important milestone for the State’s medical education sector and for expanding access to Ayurveda-based healthcare services in Tripura.
Dr. Saha expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge) Prataprao Jadhav for their support in sanctioning the government Ayurvedic medical college.
According to the Chief Minister, the establishment of the college will contribute significantly to strengthening medical education, training of Ayurvedic doctors and Ayurvedic healthcare services in the State. The institution is also expected to create new opportunities for students from Tripura and the wider northeastern region to pursue professional education in the Indian System of Medicine.
The proposed college and hospital at Tepania, Udaipur, will bring Ayurvedic medical education and clinical services under one institutional framework, potentially strengthening the availability of trained professionals and specialised Ayurvedic treatment facilities in Gomati district and adjoining areas.
The approval by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine marks an important step forward in the State Government’s efforts to expand the healthcare and medical education ecosystem beyond conventional modern medicine.
With 60 BAMS seats in the undergraduate programme, the new institution is expected to become an important centre for Ayurvedic education in Tripura. The associated hospital will also provide a platform for practical clinical training for students while expanding access to Ayurveda-based treatment for patients.
Welcoming the development, the Chief Minister said the new institution would help further strengthen both medical education and Ayurvedic health services in Tripura.
The government is now expected to take forward the necessary academic, administrative and infrastructure-related preparations for operationalising the institution in accordance with the requirements of the NCISM.
The establishment of the Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital is being viewed as another significant addition to the State’s healthcare infrastructure and a step towards creating more opportunities for professional medical education within Tripura itself.
