At a time when the CPI (M) and Congress continue their meaningless and self-serving struggle against the chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and, by proxy, the BJP led NDA government in Centre, senior Congress MLA and invitee member of Congress Working Committee (CWC) , Sudip Roybarman has declared the state Congress’s intent to fight the upcoming statewide civic polls alone without any alliance with the state CPI (M). He made his stand clear in an interview with a local TV channel.

Replying to queries from the interviewer Sudip said that Congress and CPI (M) have been fighting assembly and Loksabha polls as rivals in Kerala as also in West Bengal and other states. “We have very recently fought and won the assembly election in Kerala against the CPI (M) ; even in the West Bengal assembly polls held in April this year we fought alone and won a seat; so I feel that there is no point in fight in alliance with the CPI (M) in Tripura” said Sudip. He also cited the instance of the just-concluded elections to the 587 Village Committees in ADC which the Congress fought alone. “Our performance in the Village Committee polls has not been up to our expectations but still we won a couple of seats and made a good beginning to regain our base in the tribal dominated areas; we have to go alone to build up afresh our base all over the state” said Sudip. He also expressed his ire again against the CPI (M) for the unilateral manner in which the CPI (M) had announced its candidature for the by-election to the Dharma Nagar assembly constituency early this year without any consultation with the Congress that had fought the seat in 2023 assembly elections.

Sources in the CPI (M) refused to react to the statement made by Sudip, saying a decision on this will be taken at higher level of the party and no comment can be made at this stage. However , a senior CPI (M) leader dropped a hint that Congress will hurt itself more grievously in case it decides to go alone in the upcoming civic polls. “Our party will respond to this at a later stage but right now we won’t make any comment on what Sudip Roybarman has said” said a senior leader of the party.
