The counting of ballots for the Village Committee elections turned violent in many places today across the state. After the trouble in Tulasikhar block and Thalibari area of Kathalia block , fresh trouble broke out in Champahaor bock under Khowai subdivision. Sources from Khowai said that a large number of people had gathered in front of the Champahaor block in Khowai subdivision for the counting. But around 10.00 in the morning the crowd turned restive and tried to break through the police barricade around the counting centre of the block. The police and TSR personnel deployed there were forced to resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd . At least fifteen people sustained injuries in the lathi-charge and were taken to hospital in Khowai . Among the injured one person Motilal Sarkar (35) who had sustained a head injury was declared ‘brought dead’ by the doctor on duty. His family members told media persons that the police personnel deployed around the Champahaor block had resorted to an indiscriminate lathi-charge and inflicted a severe head injury on Motilal Sarkar who succumbed to the injuries inflicted on him. This sparked tension in the area.

Meanwhile, the unruly elements of ‘Tipra Motha’ created a fresh trouble in the Maharani HS school, the counting centre of ballots for the Village Committee elections, in the Salema block. The unruly elements of ‘Tipra Motha’ forcibly seized the cards given to the counting agents of opposition CPI (M) and drove them away from the counting centre. To protest the illegal ouster from the counting hall the CPI (M) agents, leaders and workers launched a road blockade on the Salema-Kamalpur road . However, police personnel and civil officials from Ambassa and Kamalpur rushed to the spot and convinced the CPIO (M) workers and supporters to withdraw the blockade which they did.
