Counting of votes for the long-awaited Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) began across Tripura on Monday amid tight security, with early trends indicating that Tipra Motha is emerging as the leading party, followed by the BJP and CPI(M).
The counting process began at around 8 am at centres across the ADC areas. The State Election Commission had deployed around 2,000 personnel and strengthened security arrangements with central armed forces, Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles. The counting is being conducted through ballot papers and officials have indicated that results in some large blocks may take considerably longer.
According to preliminary figures and local counting updates available around noon, Tipra Motha was in first position, BJP second and CPI(M) third, while Congress was fourth. IPFT had not secured a seat in the early results reported up to noon, although counting was still continuing and the position could change as more rounds are completed.
The early trends are particularly significant because the Village Committee election was contested in a complex political environment. Although BJP and Tipra Motha are allies at the government level, the two parties fielded candidates against each other in a substantial number of Village Committee seats.
The elections covered 587 Village Committees and 4,597 seats. Polling took place for 2,950 seats, while Tipra Motha and BJP candidates were elected unopposed to 1,644 seats. The election recorded around 81 per cent turnout.
The Left Front, which had been seeking a political revival in the ADC areas, has also opened its account.
In Bagafa block, CPI(M) candidates were reported to have won two seats in Bir Chandra and one seat in Rajapur.
In Hirachhara, Congress was reported to have won six seats, while Tipra Motha secured three.
At Deora Chhara, among nine seats, Congress was reported to have won four, Tipra Motha three and BJP two.
In Laljuri block, BJP candidates reportedly won three Village seats while Tipra Motha secured one.
In Manu, Tipra Motha was reported to have won six seats.
In Rupaichhari block of Sabroom, Tipra Motha reportedly registered a clean sweep in Magurum, winning all seven seats.
In Chhawmanu, Tipra Motha was reported to be leading in Ward No. 1 after the first round, with its candidate ahead by 78 votes.
These are early, round-wise results and trends, and the final party-wise tally is expected to change substantially as counting continues.
Opposition parties and candidates alleged that their counting agents faced intimidation and were prevented from properly participating in the counting process at some centres.
At Salema, a road blockade and protest were reportedly organised after allegations that CPI(M)/Left Front counting agents were removed from the counting centre at Maharani High School. Protesters alleged that counting agents were forced out and that their agent cards were taken away.
A separate road blockade was also reported in the Halhali/Maharani area, with CPIM protesters demanding action over the alleged expulsion of counting agents.
At the Bharat Sardar Para Higher Secondary School counting centre, tension reportedly erupted after clashes involving Tipra Motha supporters, Independents and IPFT supporters. Local reports alleged physical confrontation inside or around the counting venue before the counting of even a single seat had been completed.
There were also allegations from BJP supporters in Salema that their counting agents had been removed from a counting centre. These allegations could not immediately be independently verified.
Political violence allegations spread
In Kathalia, reports emerged of a BJP supporter allegedly being attacked with a lathi on the head, while another report claimed that vehicles carrying political workers travelling towards a counting centre were vandalised in the Thalibari area of Kathalia RD Block.
There were also reports of tension around Tulasikhar block, including allegations of police lathi-charge during a confrontation involving Tipra Motha supporters and local CPIM political workers.
The developments have added to concerns over the possibility of post-counting clashes in the ADC areas.
The State Election Commission had already anticipated the possibility of tension and deployed security forces at counting centres. Officials said approximately 2,000 personnel were assigned to the counting process, with multi-layered security arrangements put in place.
The authorities have also imposed prohibitory restrictions in parts of Gomati district following a firing incident during polling in which a Tipra Motha candidate was injured.
Before counting began, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma had appealed to supporters to maintain peace and not allow political differences to turn into violence within the indigenous community.
The Village Committee results are being closely watched because the TTAADC region accounts for a substantial part of Tripura's tribal electorate and is politically crucial ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
