A major controversy erupted during the Super Four encounter of the Agartala League 2026 between Egiye Chalo Sangha and Blood Mouth Club at Umakanta Maidan on Saturday, after a disputed handball/penalty decision triggered a heated confrontation involving players, the referee, police and security personnel.
The match, which was being closely watched by football supporters, took an unexpected turn after the referee awarded a penalty following a handball incident. Players and officials of Blood Mouth reportedly protested the decision, leading to a tense situation on the field.
The referee subsequently showed a yellow card during the confrontation. The situation deteriorated further as Blood Mouth players reportedly left the field in protest against the referee's decision.
At that stage, Egiye Chalo Sangha were leading 1–0. According to accounts from the ground, Blood Mouth did not return to the field within the stipulated period. Referee Biswajit Das subsequently ended the match and Egiye Chalo Sangha were declared winners in accordance with the applicable match procedure, according to reports from the venue.
The controversy did not end with the match being stopped. Allegations emerged that Blood Mouth footballer Parvez Bhuiyan and a team official/manager confronted referee Biswajit Das after the incident.
The situation reportedly became tense enough for police and security personnel to enter the playing area. There were also reports of a possible physical confrontation between some Blood Mouth players and police personnel.
The allegations surrounding the confrontation require verification by the concerned football authorities and law-enforcement agencies. Any disciplinary action, if taken, would depend on the official match report, video evidence and subsequent inquiry.
The incident has once again raised questions about discipline, referee protection and match management in Tripura football.
Spectators who purchase tickets to watch competitive football expect to see the game decided on the field rather than witness confrontations involving players, officials and security personnel. The latest incident has therefore generated considerable disappointment among football followers.
Several spectators and football supporters have also questioned why a match of such importance was allowed to descend into disorder and whether adequate mechanisms exist to deal with disputes over refereeing decisions.
The penalty decision has become the central point of controversy, with supporters divided over whether the handball warranted the referee's decision.
Some football followers have argued that, where technically feasible, important matches should have comprehensive video recording so that disputed incidents can subsequently be reviewed by the appropriate authorities. While football at this level may not have access to a full VAR system, proper match recording could provide an objective record for disciplinary and refereeing reviews.
